7 facts about domestic violence and pets

April is Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month.

Readers of Life With Beagle will know we take a special interest in one particular form of animal cruelty: domestic violence.

This coming Saturday, Harbor House of Central Florida, Orlando's domestic violence shelter, is hosting a walk to raise money for the Paws for Peace Kennel, a refuge for the pets of domestic abuse survivors.

Here are 7 reasons why this kennel is needed in Orlando -- and why more like it should exist all over America.

Your dogs will beg for Rocky's Rollers by Jones: REVIEW and GIVEAWAY

Jones Natural Chews is a proud sponsor of Life With Beagle and Lulu's Favorite Things, our annual fundraising campaign for Harbor House of Central Florida. Although we received compensation for the post, my opinions are my own -- and so are Lulu's.

How much does Lulu like Rocky's Rollers?

We first heard about these new treats from Jones Natural Chews while visiting their booth at Global Pet Expo. They gave me a sample -- long lamb sausage links. I gave one each to Lulu and Jasmine that week. Lulu did something I'd never seen before -- she pulled it from Jasmine's mouth!

Harbor House hosting its Paws for Peace Walk: Join our team

Today, H is for Harbor House of Central Florida in the A to Z Challenge!

Last week we talked about domestic abuse and how it affects people and pets. This week I want to talk a bit more about Harbor House and the amazing work they do.

Harbor House takes in domestic abuse survivors from all over Central Florida, but primarily Orange County.

Sadly, Orange County has some of the highest rates of domestic violence in the state.

Domestic abuse hurts pets too

Today -- D is for a very serious issue: domestic abuse.

When we think of that, we think of people abusing people they're supposed to love: men, women and children.

What about pets?

Sadly some abusers will target a pet to keep an abuse victim from leaving. And sometimes, they do it just to hurt that victim. Pets get abused, some are even killed.
  • 48% of survivors delay leaving an abusive situation for fear their pets will be maimed or killed.
  • 88% of pets living in domestic violence homes are either abused or killed.
Because of this, many victims will delay escaping a dangerous situation if they can't take their pet with them.

Where I live in Orlando, FL, we are extremely fortunate. We have Harbor House of Central Florida. Harbor House is one of the few domestic violence shelters in the country to have an onsite kennel for the pets of domestic violence victims.
The kennel opened in 2012.
The kennel is 100 percent privately funded. Since it's opened it's saved dogs, cats, even a guinea pig.

But they need help. That's why Saturday, April 26, we're walking to help raise awareness and money for Harbor House. 100 percent of the Paws for Peace Walk goes to Harbor House for its kennel!

We'll be talking more about it this month. We hope you will join us, or help support Team Beagle in the walk!

Fight domestic abuse! Enter to win a purple Sherpa #purplepurse

What does it mean to be economically secure as a pet owner?

It means that when you want to go out and buy your pet food, you can do it without asking permission.

If you want to pick up a new toy for your pet, no problem.

If you pet needs a vet appointment, you can schedule one and pay for it.

And if you need to live on your own, you can afford the pet deposit in your rented home.

For domestic abuse survivors, little of this is possible.

The #PurplePurse campaign raises awareness of the kind of domestic abuse we rarely think about: economic abuse. When your abuser controls the purse strings, how are you to get out of your situation.

And Harbor House of Central Florida is hosting a raffle to win a brand new purple Sherpa pet carrier, donated by Quaker Pet Group. Read on to find out more.

Carol Wick, CEO of Harbor House of Central Florida, Orlando's domestic abuse shelter, said many people who come to them have little more than the clothes on their back.

Eighty-five percent of women who come to a domestic abuse shelter reported pet abuse in their home. Harbor House is one of the few shelters in the country to have an on-site kennel for pets. Many of these pets come without necessary vet care.

There is already a fund set up for that: Marvin's Fund. But Harbor House also has a fund for people who leave the shelter and want to find a pet-friendly place to live. This fund helps pay for pet deposits.

That's why Harbor House is raffling off a purple (actually plum) Sherpa bag! It's the Sherpa Original Deluxe Pet Carrier, a soft-sided carrier, great for cats or dogs. It's also airline approved.

The Sherpa is valued at $69.99. But from now until Oct. 1, you can enter our $10 raffle to win this bag!

The #PurplePurse campaign is a national fundraiser by AllState. Shelters across the country are raising money and competing to win prizes. So please help Harbor House by donating $10 to help a domestic abuse survivor take their beloved pet to a new home. Enter today!

PS: Don't need a Sherpa? You can still help!

Harbor House is also hosting a $25 raffle for one of two purple handbags! One is a purple Coach bag. Then for an additional $10, you can enter to win a purple purse specially designed by actress Kerry Washington (Scandal) for this campaign. It's a $25 entry fee for the raffle. Please enter today!

It's starting to feel like fall for some of you. Some of you are even getting snow.

Not here in Florida. Saturday has a high of 91 degrees.

"I choose the pool life." -- Lulu
Not to say it doesn't have its benefits, but it's time for pretty leaves, apples, pumpkins, jackets, cinnamon, mulled cider and Halloween!

Time to get the dogs interested too. And here's a chance to get you excited for Halloween too!

If you follow Life With Beagle, you've read our Jones Natural Chews reviews before. This is one of their newest and neatest treats.

The bucket has nine items in it and is reuseable: a Windee, 2 Lambly Links, 2 Woofers, a beef Knee Cap, a beef hoof, an "other pig ear" (a piece of pig chin) and a bacon roll.

They are all great treats if you are looking for a special treat that keeps the dogs busy for a while.

In case you didn't know, I love Jones Natural Chews. Their products are made in the USA, all natural (they rarely use anything other than the basic meat product) and are a family-owned company. Their products are not too expensive either.

And, of course, the dogs love them.

Jasmine tried her first beef trachea. It's tough for Lulu to work on, but Jasmine was able to get in there and break it open.

Lulu chose the bacon roll from the bucket, which is a favorite of hers.

Just don't try to take it from her.

Now for your chance to win!

This giveaway is for one Jones Natural Chews Bow Wow Boo Bucket, mailed to your home in time for Halloween! Enter the Rafflecopter now through Oct. 1 for chances to win. There's only one mandatory entry -- you have to leave a comment on the blog below.

Raise a virtual paw if your dog destroys their toys?

Lulu destroyed toys when she was young. DESTROYED. But since she's matured the destruction has stopped. For the most part.

This whale has a hole under a fin.

This bunny ear was found recently. I have not seen the bunny, but I'm sure it's around somewhere.

Then there's this.

Lulu's platypus. Lulu adores her this thing. But she also gets crazy frustrated with it because she can't pull the squeaker out.

It's a GoDog toy from Quaker Pet Group.

GoDog has Chew Guard Technology -- a tough mesh liner inside the toy, along with double-stitched seams. They are meant for dogs who are chew crazy.

Think your dog can destroy a GoDog? They will replace the toy! One free replacement, guaranteed.

This is Xena, and she is a champion chewer (she chewed an antler to a nub in a span of a week). Her mom gives her this goDog every once and while. As you can see -- still in good shape.

You can find goDog toys at boutique pet shops, at Petco and on Amazon.

GIVEAWAY:

RIGHT NOW, we are giving away two goDogs for one lucky person! The winner gets to choose what size and type they want!

All you have to do is comment below -- what kind do you want! Head to the goDog site and check out the toys. Maybe you could get the Dragons, or the Crazy Tugs, which stretchable arms! Or maybe you find the Zombiez too funny not to get!

You know the old saying "give a dog a bone?"

The time-honored tradition of the dog chewing on a bone at his master's feet hasn't gone away, though it's more of a treat than the main meal. Stripping a bone is actually good for a dog's teeth, and it's a great way to keep a dog busy.

But rawhide is not the best thing for many dogs, and ESPECIALLY beagles. You have to worry about what kind of bone you give as well.

That's why I like Jones Natural Chews, and they are up first in our Lulu's Favorite things campaign.

It's not just Flea, JNC's quirky blogger that makes Jones great. Or her penchant for bringing chicks to conferences.

These products are great, and Lulu loves them.

Jones got its start as a family of butchers in the 1850s. But once Jones started offering to butcher and smoke the best cuts of meats for local farms in the 1970s, Jones also became a place to get great dog chews. After all, there's lots of bones and animal parts that would be thrown away otherwise.

In 1988, some of the Jones kids got together and started expanding on those dog chews. Today, Jones chews are USDA inspected, made in America and still family owned.

So what kind of animal parts are we talking about?

Here's some of our favorites:

Lulu absolutely loves pig ears. I like the pig ear snacks because I can give her a piece of pig ear and as a high-value snack. She doesn't get all the calories, and but gets a bit of something to chew (because pig ears are pretty high calorie).

Did you know? Many companies coat pig ears with a preservative. Sometimes it's glycerin. But that preservative can be a problem for beagles. I've even had some beagle people tell me it can cause seizures.

So when Lulu had what I assumed was a seizure last year, I looked into this. Jones uses no preservatives. They coat the ears with fat when they bake them. That's it. Lulu's been eating them for months, and no problems!

We also like these rib bones! But my favorites come with a special treat -- a piece of pig skin wrapped around. It's called a rib roller. Lulu has a stash of the bones under the recliner (kid you not). Every once in a while I hear her digging -- she's pulling a bone out to chew. She'll take a while to actually strip it and chew it, but she loves it when she does.

Then there are the TaffySnapz! It's like candy for dogs. It comes in all kinds of flavors. These sausage sticks are beef, rye flour and salt. That's it!

They've got other great treats too -- filled bones, lamb lungs, windees -- trachea, which Mom's dog Cappy loves.

How do you get Jones Natural Chews?

They are available in pet stores, on Amazon and on Jones' -affiliated treat shop website.

There's a store locator on their website.

BUT -- you can win some Jones Natural Chews right now!

We are giving away a 20-piece Variety pack:
  • Beef Hooves
  • Beef Rib Bone pieces
  • Pork Skin Roll pieces
  • Pig Ear slices
  • Beef Bully Stick pieces
  • Steer Stick pieces
Here's an in-depth look from Jones Natural chews, with great info on each treat.

Go Orange for animals! Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month

Lulu is going orange!

April is Prevention of Cruelty to Animals month, sponsored by ASPCA.

Here at Life With Beagle, we are committed to making the quality of life better for people and for pets. In a moment we'll tell you how you can help us with this endeavour this month.

Do you know how to prevent animal abuse?

ASPCA points out these 10 ways to prevent animal abuse where you live:
  1. Know who to call to report animal cruelty. Every state and every town are different. In some areas, you may have to rely on the police department to investigate animal cruelty; in others, you may have to contact local animal control or another municipal agency. If you aren't sure where to report cruelty, please visit our Report Animal Cruelty section.

  2. Get to know and look out for the animals in your neighborhood. By being aware, you're more likely to notice, for example, that the dog next door who was once hefty has lost weight rapidly—a possible indicator of abuse.

  3. Make the call. Without phone calls from concerned citizens who report cruelty in their neighborhoods, we wouldn't know about most instances of animal abuse. It all comes from the public, it all starts with YOU—that's why it's so important to keep your eyes and ears open.

  4. Provide as much as information as possible when reporting animal cruelty. The details that you provide can go a long way toward assisting an investigating officer. It helps to write down the type of cruelty you witnessed, who was involved, the date of the incident and where it took place.

  5. Contact your local law enforcement department and let them know that investigating animal cruelty should be a priority. Animal cruelty is a CRIME—and the police MUST investigate these crimes.

  6. Fight for the passage of strong anti-cruelty laws on federal, state and local levels by joining the ASPCA Advocacy Brigade. With stronger laws come tougher penalties. As an ASPCA Advocacy Brigade member, you'll receive emails asking you to write letters encouraging your legislators to pass these laws—and you can send them directly from our website.

  7. Set a good example for others. If you have pets, be sure to always show them the love and good care they deserve. But it's more than just food, water, and adequate shelter. If you think your animal is sick, bring him to the veterinarian. Be responsible and have your animals spayed or neutered. And give your pets lots of hugs!

  8. Talk to your kids about how to treat animals with kindness and respect. We regularly see children in homes where animal abuse has been reported. If a parent isn't treating the family's pets right, we tell the kids that their dog or cat would really appreciate fresh water every day or some daily playtime. If the animal has been left outside without shelter, we'll say, 'You have a nice house, and if you get cold, you can put a coat on. But your dog can't do that.' Children understand that animals are living creatures who have the ability to feel pain, joy and sadness.

  9. Support your local shelter or animal rescue organization. It's a great way to make a difference. Some of our ASPCA volunteers foster animals who have been abused in their former homes, giving these dogs and cats the chance they deserve to have a good life. You can find a list of shelters and rescue groups in your area in our National Shelter Directory.

  10. Start a Neighborhood Watch Program. Get to know the animals in your neighborhood and invite your friends and neighbors to do the same. Together you can keep an eye out for any suspicious behaviors—abuse and neglect of companion animals, the mistreatment of local wildlife, dogs left in hot cars and other signs of abuse.

In our continuing commitment to supporting the human-animal bond, we are once again raising money for the Paws for Peace Walk.

Harbor House of Central Florida has a state of the art, on-property kennel for the pets of domestic violence victims, all paid for with private donations.

Up to 48 percent of domestic violence victims delay leaving a dangerous situation because they don't want to leave their pets.

The Paws for Peace Walk is April 26 at 8 a.m. at Blue Jacket Park in Orlando.

Harbor House Paws for Peace Kennel: 1 year later

About a year ago we took you on a tour of a new kennel in Orange County, Florida -- a safe haven for pets of people escaping abusive relationships.

The Paws for Peace Kennel opened last year at the Harbor House of Central Florida complex.

The idea for the kennel came about eight years ago. The goal was a privately-funded facility that cared for the pets of domestic violence victims – more like a doggy day care than a shelter.

“We had one $50,000 donation from the Orange County Animal Services trust fund but the remaining was all private,” said Carol Wick, CEO for Harbor House.

The kennel includes special kennels for dogs, cubbies for cats, dog runs, a park and a cat porch.

But the first pet to enter the shelter? A guinea pig.

Since then the shelter has also cared for 44 dogs, 14 cats and a bird.

Harbor House said 49 families were able to escape their situation thanks to the kennel. Could they escape without their pets? Maybe.

However, 48 percent of domestic abuse victims will hold off on leaving because they fear what will happen to their pets.

Many shelters do try to find some way to make accommodations, partnering with an animal shelter or rescue. But few shelters across the country have the ability to take pets in, like Harbor House does now.

Up to 85 percent of domestic abuse victims say their partner threatened, hurt or killed a pet.

Before the opening of the shelter, which services Orange County primarily, Harbor House got one or two calls a week from people who needed a place for their pet.

The goal now is to get more shelters across the country to do. Harbor House is now working to help other shelters open a kennel like theirs.

Harbor House also continues to raise money and seek donations to keep the shelter going. In April the shelter will host the Paws for Peace Walk fundraiser. It’s being held in April to coincide with National Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month.

PHOTO TOUR: Harbor House's Paws for Peace kennel opens

While a everyone went gaga over the grand opening of New Fantasyland at Walt Disney World, much further north in Orange County, I joined a group of community leaders a very different grand opening.

Harbor House Board of Directors President Janet Ziomek, Orange County Animal Services Division Manager Dil Luther, SeaWorld Orlando VP of Marketing Toni Caracciolo, Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs, and Harbor House CEO Carol Wick cut the ribbon on the Paws for Peace kennel.

Harbor House of Central Florida opened its new Paws for Peace kennel and in-kind donation center Thursday, after years of fund raising and planning.

Sadly, this kind of facility is desperately needed.

The Harbor House says up to 48 percent of domestic violence victims delay getting out of their bad situation because they don't want to leave their pets. And up until this week, Harbor House had no place for pets. Across the country, only 70 domestic violence shelters accept pets at all.

Back in October Life With Beagle helped organize Doggy Day Out Orlando, which collected donations for this very facility.

And in November I walked in the Paws for Peace walk, and raised about $150 for Harbor House.

This is why we did all that. And take a close look at the following pictures... you may recognize some of the things you donated.

A 2,100 square-foot warehouse will hold in-kind donations. Harbor House goes through thousands, if not millions of items every year. Not only do they need to keep their facilities stocked, they also help families start over. Many escape without more than the clothes on their backs.

A section for pet items.

In the shelter itself, a pantry for food.
This sink is part of a full-service grooming area. Hollywood Houndz in Lake Mary helped provide the equipment and volunteers.
Two sets of these cat condos! There's room for 10 cats to live comfortably. They are working on getting a multi-story condo for cat families.

A cat porch! Owners can sit out here with their cats and relax.
What are they watching on the cat porch? The dog park!
There are 10 of these kennels for the dogs. And each have a bed, dishes and something to chew on.
And finally, dog runs. For when the dog just has to go.

The Paws for Peace kennel and Harbor House could still use some donations. If you are interested in helping, head to the Harbor House website.
